Today we lost one of my most favorite illustrators and writers. His work was the reason I wanted to draw at all. Mom used to read me this book when I was about two or three, which started the Sendak addiction. You can see I practiced in crayon, right on the cover, trying to draw like him.
No Sendak biography ever captured what a cool and fun personality Sendak had as these Steven Colbert interview videos have! I want to remember Sendak this way...fun, funny, brilliant, authentic and honest. His inspirational illustrations live within all the people who grew up experiencing his wonderfully original books.
You will be painfully missed, Maurice Sendak.
